CLOSING OF SAN JUAN FLIGHT SERVICE STATION
I HAVE PERSONALLY CONFIRMED WITH FSS LOCAL TOP MANAGEMENT THAT IT
IS OFFICIAL THIS TIME, WE ARE LOOSING OUR FSS OFFICE ON DECEMBER
OF THIS YEAR. LETTERS HAVE ALREADY BEEN GIVEN TO ALL EMPLOYEES FOR
THE RELOCATION OR DISMISSAL. THIS HAVE BEEN A LONG LASTING RUMOR
FOR THE LAST FIFTEEN YEARS, BUT THIS TIME IT IS A REALITY, THE MAIN
REASON FOR THIS ACTION IS THAT THE BUILDING DOES NOT MEET FEDERAL
STANDARDS FOR THIS TYPE OF FACILITY, THE FUNDING FOR THE UPGRADE IS
STALLED AND THE DEADLINE IS DECEMBER.
THE IMPORTANCE OF A LOCALLY OPERATED AND STAFFED FACILITY, IN CASE
OF MAJOR WEATHER DISTURBANCES, INTERNATIONAL OPERATIONS, AND GENERAL
ORIENTATION AND PLANNING, IS PARAMOUNT TO THE SAFETY OF ALL OF US
FLYING IN THE CARIBBEAN; AND THERE IS NO WAY A REMOTE FACILITY
(PROBABLY MIAMI OR ST. PETE) COULD PERFORM WITH THE SAME LEVEL OF
OPERATIONAL SAFETY AND AREA KNOWLEDGE AS A LOCAL FACILITY.
WE NEED TO EXERT AS MUCH PUBLIC PRESSURE AS POSSIBLE, PLEASE FORWARD
THIS PLEDGE TO ALL INVOLVED WITH OUR AVIATION COMMUNITY, AND TO ALL
ENTITIES THAT COULD BE OF HELP, I.E.: AOPA, PRPA, RESIDENT COMMISSIONER,
ETC., AND REMEMBER THAT WE CANNOT COMPLAINT IF AFFIRMATIVE ACTION IS NOT
TAKEN TO PREVENT LOOSING OUR FSS.
BEST REGARDS,
CARLOS E. REYES
PRESIDENT
ISLA GRANDE FLYING SCHOOL
